I think console companies (and I’m sure they already know this) can’t downplay the role that game titles play in deciding which game console to go with. Back when I was youngun we only had two systems, Sega and Nintendo and it seemed that Sega had a huge foot hold here in Australia, just mention Alex Kidd here and people of a certain age bracket (except my wife) will glaze over with happy memories and then want to Rock Paper Scissors with you. So I think that it wasn’t really much of a decisi

Flash is a programming language recently acquired by Adobe, and although the original design did not include this, is responsible for some of the coolest online applications today. Mix that up with the extremely popular and successful SEGA mascot, Sonic and what you have is a recipe for endless gaming. The games are broadly user generated, meaning that they are built and developed by fans, for fans. Using Sonic the Hedgehog, his attributes and “world” as a template, literally hundreds of games h

From the personal recorder of an unnamed Data East executive at a recent board meeting: “Dammit, Konami keeps pumping out Frogger games like anybody gives a damn, and you can’t swing a dead hedgehog without hitting a Sega retro collection… what beloved classics do we have in our library for massive retail damage?” “Burgertime, sure, Burgertime. Bad Dudes, yes. ‘Are you bad enough to save the president’s daughter,’ blah blah meme blah. What else?” “Side Pocket? Magical Drop III? Caveman Ni

Now that you’ve got your Donkey Kong , Pac-Man and Tetris retro mini arcade cabinets , it’s time to add to your tiny arcade collection with a few slightly newer games. These 4-inch long mini arcade games are modeled after classics from SEGA’s arcade hey-day. The SEGA Taikan Game Collection is a complete set of classic sit-down arcade games including OutRun , Hang On , Space Harrier , Thunder Blade and a fifth “secret mystery game” (scroll down to see the mystery revealed). Haynes recently sent me their latest manual for review. When people think of Haynes in the UK, it’s normally car manuals that come to mind. In this case we are actually reviewing “The Video Gaming Manual” which is described as the essential guide to modern and retro gaming platforms. On the cover of the manual are a bunch of old computers and consoles ranging from a ZX Spectrum, to a Sega Master System, on to a Game Cube and then to a Playstation 3. The book starts off describing what video ga

The online appeal of SEGAS’ much beloved mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog can be seen in the massive availability of flash games, cheats, tutorials etc. online. Sonic online has in fact become a source of revenue for many open-source based spin-offs. In addition, rather than decrease sales of the official SEGA released games, Sonic Online has created a growing “engine of interest.” The brand has engendered itself into popular culture. For example, not only is Sonic the most recognizable game character

[Every Thursday is Retro Day at Gamer Limit, so kick back and enjoy the classics!] I have always been a Sega fanboy. My first console was the almighty Sega Mega Drive (Genesis for all you Yanks out there), and since then I have drooled over – if not owned – every Sega system that followed. While I didn’t realize it at the time, I have always been fond of fantastical RPGs, despite my distaste for turn-based fighting systems. Sega was unable to provide me with enough role-playing fodder, and

Super Monaco GP appeared on Sega, Amiga, Atari and other formats in 1989 Codemasters’ F1 2009 game was seen on video for the first time yesterday – which led to lots of comments about favourite F1 games of years passed. Guest writer Gerard Hetman remembers Super Monaco GP. Produced by Sega for the Genesis/Mega Drive platform, Super Monaco GP was released in 1990 after being styled on an arcade–based game of the same name. With two modes of play, an awesome soundtrack, and many lifel

I love video games especially the older “retro” ones from my youth. I started playing games on an Atari 2600 but did not become addicted until the Nintendo Entertainment System. The NES was great to me in middle school and the start of high school, but in the early 90’s I moved to “the next level.” The SEGA Genesis was released 20 years ago today in the US and while I was not one of the first to have the system, it still goes down in the record books as the system I put the most time into.
